FEATURED CHALLENGE POSTED 4/1/13
Set your dehumidifier
at the right levels:
Excess moisture
in your home can lead to mold and mildew, which can
cause health problems and damage your home and
possessions. A dehumidifier can help you maintain
the comfort level in your home while preventing the
growth of these allergens. While dehumidifiers can
use a lot of energy, an efficient unit used properly
can help you control humidity while managing its
operating cost. The trick is to set the unit at the
right humidity level. Experts agree that setting the
dehumidifier to 50 percent is adequate, since mold
will not start to grow until humidity levels go
above 55 percent. If you set the unit any lower, you
will actually be wasting energy and money.
Dehumidifiers set to 40 percent humidity have to
operate for longer periods of time to maintain the
lower setting, which costs more. And you usually
cannot achieve humidity much below 40 percent,
anyway. Take the Set Your Dehumidifier at
the Right Level Challenge today by clicking
on the link below. You will see how much energy and
money you can save by setting your dehumidifier at
50 percent and how many carbon dioxide emissions
will be eliminated. All savings are estimated
based on an average 1,500-square-foot home in the LES service
area. |

443 participants
have saved 30,135
kWh — enough to power 30
houses for one month — and have reduced CO2
emissions by 43,914 pounds.
